Everyone is so excited about the school year being over! But I can’t decide who is more excited. The kids all have dreams of lazy mornings, cartoons and pool time all the while Mom and Dad have dreams of easier morning routines, lax bedtimes and no homework!
But with this buzz of excitement comes the spark of the frayed nerves and short fuses. The kids are exhausted. I feel like everything is a huge battle and even the smallest things can set off a huge tantrum. Marlee has been dishing out dirty looks and back talk like no body’s business. It’s like she hasn’t had to take a shower every night all school year long but boy, this week every night it was the end of the world! Milo is still getting homework and still has spelling and math to study for and he is taking extra pushing because he just wants to play ball! Chase is the calmest of the three but in their defense, he is finishing kindergarten and still has it pretty easy. He still thinks school is ‘cool’ and ‘fun’ and can’t wait until he is in 1st grade! But each day one or more of them really pushes the limits to the max!
It doesn’t help that it is baseball season. Every day we rush home, eat a quick supper and head to the ball diamonds! When we get home it is still light out so no one wants to go to bed, even though that is where everyone should be!
I can’t forget Vayda in all of this. The poor baby gets caught up in the shuffle and deals with it as well as to be expected! She loves being out side and seeing other people but when her bedtime rolls around she wants to go to bed and that is it! And did I mention she is teething?! Oh yes, the icing on the cake!
Days like this really test my parenting skills. As much as I tell myself that I need to relax, they are just tired, I still find myself yelling a lot and constantly shuffling people from one thing to the next. When bedtime rolls around I breath a sigh of relief, nearly pass out myself and wake up to do it all again! (If there is some secret key to keeping your patience in all of this, please share!) But with this, I can’t ignore that with this passing school year, there goes more time that has past with them so remembering this keeps me grounded!
I love everything that comes along with raising a big family but there are season in everything. This one is tough but we will be through it before we know it and then it’s onto summer fun! They only have a few more days left before school is out for the summer and I have a feeling they are going to be the longest days of them all! Wish me luck!
