We just celebrated Kip’s first birthday and it was so much fun! His party was space themed…Kip’s First Trip Around the Sun! And since our lives are pretty busy and hello…five kids…we keep our birthday parties pretty simple and understated! For a big statement, the main decoration pieces at Kip’s party was a balloon cloud!
I knew I wanted to do something with balloons because I knew he would love playing with them when the party was over! I didn’t want to spend a lot of money and after a bit of Pinterest research, I learned about balloon clouds!
Balloon clouds are just a cluster of balloons, fastened together to well, look like a cloud! They are often different colors and sizes to add a bit of dimension. Keep reading to learn how to create your own, super simple balloon cloud!
DIY Balloon Cloud
Gather supplies
First, get your balloons. I searched online for a pack of simple black and white balloons to go with our theme. I found this pack of 30 black, white and marbled balloons on Amazon!
Next I found some upholstery thread (this thread is a bit thicker than normal thread!) You can use any color but I just used a spool that I had since it was a neutral color. I think fishing line would work too! And you can use any size or type of needle as well!
Preparation
To prep the needle and thread, you just pull it through the needle then tie a knot down about 5 inches from the needle. I suggest leaving the thread on the spool so you can work with different lengths. You will cut it from the spool later.
After you gather your supplies, you get to work blowing up the balloons! I put my big kids and husband to work on this but you could also use an air pump to make it easier. Helium is NOT required!
Assembly
Once you have all of the balloons blown up and tied off, you will start threading them with the needle. BE CAREFUL! Obviously a needle around a bunch balloons is dangerous work 🙂 Simply thread the needle through the end of the balloon after the knot. Here are some close up shots of the balloons on the thread:
Keep adding the balloons one by one and keep sliding them down the thread. Be mindful if you have different sizes and colors that you have them sorted the way you’d like.
Once you have all of the balloons on the thread, knot each end of the thread around the tail of the last balloons. You can then cut the excess thread off each end, but be sure to leave enough for hanging.
The Finished Product
Ta-da! Your DIY balloon cloud is finished! You can hang it however you’d like! We just taped ours up to the wall, but you could hang it from the ceiling or even lay them on a table…whatever you prefer!
This super simple and easy decoration hack will be sure to keep your party guests talking. And your little ones will love them as well…and it’s important to remember the party is for them, not a party magazine 😉
